"Chroma Music Festival has nothing to do with Nuevo Mundo Music Festival" - Benik Angeles

"Chroma Music Festival has nothing to do with Nuevo Mundo Music Festival"
- Benik Angeles, co-Founder & Marketing Director, Chroma Music Festival

It was just last June 1, 2017 when Nuevo Mundo Music Festival facebook page has been launched through Facebook and Twitter. In a span of 2 months, they have already gathered 7k likes on Facebook and 45,800 followers on Twitter. Musica Del Nuevo Mundo Productions Inc. aims Nuevo Mundo Music Fest to be the biggest Art, Camping and Music  Festival in metro. A one day event packed with some of the biggest local Bands to DJs and more activities then you can even imagine, Nuevo Mundo Music Fest is shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with! We got to ask Nuevo Mundo Co- Founder/Marketing Director some questions and take a deeper look inside the intriguing festival.

When you claimed that it's a camping festival, how come it's a one day event only?
When I was still part of Chroma Music Festival, I have observed the needs of early attendees. I was able to see the struggle of having a long lines before lunch just to get inside the venue for freebies. It was amazing and still proud that I've been part of it as it was the only event here in the Philippines that gathers  more than five hundred people to fall in line outside the venue during event as early as 10AM. For the people behind the industry it could be something that could be proud of but if you're gonna think of it, If you are one of those attendees, that are struggling from the heat and humid weather, wether you are a first timer festival goer or old festival goer, you might think that somehow it's not really worth it to suffer like that just to get freebies. So we've thought that since Nuevo Mundo will be also a 12 hours day event, we came up with the idea of allowing people to bring their own tents and picnic blankets and by putting some Boho tents where they can rest or chill while listening to their favorite local bands before sunset.

As a former Marketing Director of Chroma, Nuevo Mundo tends to showcase different genres as opposed to the theme of your past event. What was the process of choosing this kind of theme and ideas?
For the first time, I just want to clear out that Strix Inc or Chroma Music Festival is not affiliated with Nuevo Mundo Music Festival as some were asking if we are under the same production or management. Maybe they're curious because of the similarity of some artworks and the way how we market Nuevo Mundo. It's because maybe I am currently working with one of the best Creative Director in metro, Ej De Jesus. (Former Creative Director of  Strix) but again, it has nothing to do with with that. I'm trying my best now to improve my strategies and what I've learned from Chroma and most of all on how to think outside the box. Nuevo Mundo talent division is filled with passionate, open minded music enthusiasts. Our team, including myself, spend months curating and deciding on who we want to hit our festival stage. We also have a dedicated team that truly listens and tries to give our dedicated audience and fans what they want. So, between a mixture of our passionate music lovers, and an injection of listening to the people that are going to be there, we come up with what we truly believe to be the best lineup year after year in the country.

Has music always been a big part of your life? What led up to the decision to start your own music festival?
Growing up music was always a thing of daily activity in my life. From having a wake up song, to having a different playlist for different times of the day. Music is powerful, and can move and empower people in the most beautiful ways. I even listen to Mozart when doing my research for marketing stuffs, Listening to Katy Perry's "Part of Me" when I'm down or broken hearted. That’s something I’ve always wanted to be apart of. I was once a music festival attendee, going to different festivals for pleasure rather than business as I do now. Attending so many festivals as a patron, I believe I got to experience first hand what exactly was wrong with certain aspects of an attendees experience while at the festival. I’ve been trying, since Assemblage, to solve these issues and truly create the best experience for every adventurer! I’m still learning how to do this as every year passes!

What advice or tips would you give a first time Nuevo Mundo Music Fest attendee?
The only advice you would need as a first time Nuevo Mundo attendee would be to prepare for an experience you will never forget, regardless if your favorite act is on the stage or not, there is something to do for everyone! This is your one day Saturday getaway from everyday stresses, so treat it as such and be safe and enjoy! Come to play, relax, and party.

It’s very apparent that Nuevo Mundo is a unique festival experience, in your own words how does it stand out from other music festivals?
Nuevo Mundo will stand out with leaps and bounds from any other music festival because of what a ticket provides you. This is no longer a ticket to see an artist you love, but rather a ticket to a mini vacation, a getaway from every day life. Whether you want to splash around in our mud or slime pools, feel like a kid again on one of our side activities, be amazed in our art village, or relax in your camp ville, Nuevo Mundo has everything you need. We believe, we are on a pathway to make this a destination festival for worldwide travelers, we’re seeing it this year with purchases from places as far as Singapore, Indonesia and even Korea. Wether you like it or not, It's one of our missions here anyway. There’s nothing you can’t do to have fun at NuevoMundoMF whether electronic music is what you love or not. It’s a fairytale land that you must explore!

The festival has already making a mark in Philippine concert scene for its first 2 months. What's next for Nuevo Mundo? Any big plans in the work?
Every year there will be something new in the pipeline for Nuevo Mundo, this year and the following years are no different. I can’t give away too much, that would just ruin the surprise! I can assure you that you will want to be apart of this ride to see what we have in store for all of our fans for years to come. Expansion is our key thought process behind every decision, so we’re going to continue to grow! We have just begun.

We know you’ll be working hard all weekend, but if you magically had time to see a whole set, which artist would you choose?
With so many talented artists on this year’s roster its so hard to just choose one, so I wont! If I magically could escape the chaos I would choose to see Lea Salonga *Kidding* (laughs) Well maybe Excision, Post Malone, our very own local but dubbed as International artist, Tom Taus and of course I wouldn’t be able to miss the diversity injection of Marxx Monterola or MVRXX.

How did you come up with the name and theme for Nuevo Mundo?
Nuevo Mundo almost named itself after we decided the best theme to go along with an experience of being in a New World of Music. But originally, It came from the word Mundo Tribius - a Foundation of the late Mrs. Angel Jaafar, A former beauty queen, (Mrs. World Philippines 2015 ) A muslim princess, supposed senatorial candidate for year 2016 and a lovely empowered mother of our Foundress/ President  Title Holder as Ms. Globe International Philippines 2015, Toni Alyessa Hipolito, our Vice President Troy Hipolito and our Marketing Consultant and Head Promoter, their brother Trevor Jaafar. It's an existing foundation that helps the indigenous people. Aside from Troy's passion to create a music festival after leaving Chroma, The undying love for their mother and the siblings's eagerness to continue the legacy of their Mother has been the core value of the whole team to create something different with tribal themed music festival. It's a non profit event that helps the less fortunate and indigenous people.

As an insider in the industry, what do you think the state of EDM is in 2017?
I think EDM, just like any other industry, has its ups and downs. Speaking for my region specifically (Metro Manila) it is most definitely in incline as of now but I can see some gradually changes from the audience perspective. EDM lovers are starting to love Trap and I guess Hip-hop? Other EDM festivals experiencing growing numbers year after year so that only tells us EDM still has its flare as long as its brought to the right place and right production.
See SIKDOPE + your favorite local bands LIVE at Nuevo Mundo Music Festival on November 25, 2017 at Circuit Makati Event Grounds. Tickets available at
